Healing spaces: hospitals, rehabilitation and wellness centres across India

A place where people come to get better should help them get better. We design hospitals, clinics, rehabilitation centres, wellness retreats and meditation centres with what research in environmental psychology and neuroarchitecture tells us about stress, recovery and calm.

We work in two ways: as consultants who join your architects and healthcare planners to bring this knowledge into a project already under way, or as the architects who design and deliver the whole project, from the brief to the finished building.

We take on healing spaces all over India, in cities, on their outskirts and in rural and remote places.

What we pay attention to

Daylight and a view of nature

In a well-known study, patients recovering from surgery in rooms that looked out on trees went home sooner and needed fewer strong painkillers than patients whose window faced a brick wall (Ulrich, 1984). We plan windows, courtyards and gardens so that patients, families and staff can see green.

Quiet

Noise is a recognised risk to health (WHO Europe, 2018). We plan layouts, materials and acoustic finishes that keep wards, therapy rooms and meditation halls quiet.

A place to be alone, a place to be with others

Recovery needs both. We plan rooms that let people withdraw and rooms that draw them together, so each person can choose.

Sensory-sensitive and autism-friendly rooms

Many people, including many autistic and neurodivergent people, are overwhelmed by glare, echo and clutter. We design calmer rooms, softer light and clear, predictable routes.

Spaces for stillness

Meditation halls, prayer rooms and quiet gardens draw on what temples, monasteries and places of retreat have long known about focus and calm.

Care for the carers

Staff rooms, short routes and daylight where staff work, because people who care for others work long, hard days.

The research behind this work: healing spaces and the therapeutic milieu, the built environment and mental health, inclusive and sensory-sensitive design and materials and the senses.

How we work

We design and deliver projects of every size ourselves, with full service across India: design, drawings, approvals and site supervision. If you already have architects and a team in place, we can instead join them as consultants and bring our research into the design. See how a project runs, from brief to site.

Your budget

Tell us your budget at the start. We prefer that you set it, so we can give you the best design that budget can buy and spend it where you will feel it most. A budget is never a constraint for us: we start from the people who will use the space, not from the cost, and we have no minimum project size or fee. A single room gets the same care as a whole building.

Do you design whole hospitals, rehabilitation centres and retreats?

Yes. We can design and deliver the whole project, from the brief to the finished building, anywhere in India.

Do you design for autistic and sensory-sensitive people?

Yes. We design calmer, sensory-sensitive rooms and clear routes for autistic, neurodivergent and sensory-sensitive people.

No. We have no minimum project size or fee, and we take on work of every size, from a single room to a whole building.

What if my budget is small?

Tell us what it is. We prefer clients to set the budget, so we can give them the best design within it, and we show you where the money will make the most difference to how the space feels and works.

How much do you charge?

It depends on the project and the scope of work. Write to us with a few lines about your project and your budget, and we will reply with a proposal.
